A cash donation of £666 alongside a £500 gift voucher from Waitrose has provided significant support for the Climate Action North’s Global Wilders® initiative.

The financial donation was provided by the Waitrose branch based in Ponteland, who made initial contact with Climate Action North, and the voucher was given by Waitrose Eldon Square. Both are donations given as part of the company’s ‘Give A Little Love campaign’.

The Waitrose and John Lewis Partnership’s Give a Little Love campaign supports charities and causes in the community, and its current theme is to protect the environment. Climate Action North was chosen in its most recent round of donations alongside Climate Change Community Champions, Northumberland Wildlife Trust, Urban Green, and Seaton Sluice first school environmental projects.

The proceeds from the donations will support Global Wilders®, a programme designed to inspire, encourage, and mobilise community action during the climate emergency. One of its focuses is rewilding community areas to transform them into lively, colourful healthier places for people and wildlife, such as birds, insects, and animals, to use and enjoy.

Climate Action North’s Managing Director, Sharon Lashley, said: “It was a wonderful surprise when Waitrose contacted us to let us know they were donating to our Global Wilders® initiative.

“It’s a very welcome boost and the donations will help us deliver our activities with schools, communities, businesses, and individuals focused on people, places, plants, and animals all with the aim to tackle the climate crisis, restore nature and conserve biodiversity, and support community regeneration. This includes activities such as sowing ‘pollinator-friendly’ wildflower seeds, tree planting and introducing environmentally friendly sculptures made from willow.”

The initiative also offers learning and training opportunities covering a range of subjects including rewilding; litter and plastic pollution; energy awareness; global foot printing; and UN sustainable development goals, will also be available alongside nature walks and book wilding reading.
