‘Green June’ events announced to celebrate World Environment Day
The United Nations Environment Programme World Environment Day is celebrated on 5 June in over 100 countries and the countdown for a series of informative and celebration ‘Green June’ events to mark this special day has begun.
With the theme #OnlyOneEarth, the campaign calls for collective, transformative action to celebrate, protect and restore our planet. Events involving social enterprise Climate Action North include:
An art and biodiversity celebration (ABC22) from 3 to 5 June at the Summerhill Pavilion and Gardens in Newcastle. Alongside a family insect parade, stalls, street theatre, and a bio blitz bug hunt there will be a range of public lectures and Climate Action North will be dropping in to inspire participation in community rewilding projects and initiatives such as Global Wilders® and Pollinator Parks ®.
An event with Gateshead-based Dingy Butterflies CIC on 5 June at the Comfrey Project as they launch newly funded project ‘Bees of Bensham’. People can take part in creative activities with lead artist Barbara Keating and discover how to can get involved in the project over the next two years. Other attractions include a bee and nature walk, the One Small Change roadshow and an Earth Walk with Climate Action North.
There will also be food, music, and opportunities to explore the allotment and garden at the Comfrey Project.
A beach clean to mark World Oceans Day will take place on 8 June. Supported by North East Animals Asia, Seascapes, Coast Project Sunderland, Climate Action North, and North Sea Rejects, everyone is welcome to join the clean for Seaburn and Whitburn beaches. Equipment is provided and people simply meet on the beach below Roker Cafe at 5pm.
On Friday 10 June Climate Action North will host The Greatest Threat to Our #OnlyOneEarth event at Rainton Meadows, the home of Durham Wildlife Trust. Environmental campaigner Don Kent will share his stories and experiences around travels to the Antarctic as a speaker for Robert Swan’s 2041 Foundation, his passion for the environment, and his involvement in multiple campaigns to help the planet.
Climate Action North will exhibit at Durham University’s Greenspace Festival, on Thursday 16 June. The festival celebrates the University and wider community’s achievements in sustainability, and features stalls, environment groups, educational activities, sustainable businesses, and a selection of talks, workshops, food, and music.
Other activities during this month of intensive climate action will also include a beach clean for the Wear and Tees Action for Rivers (WATAR) programme and a tree guard recycling project at Dalton Park.
Climate Action North’s Managing Director, Sharon Lashley, said: “Green June is shaping up to be a very exciting month to share practical advice on taking action to tackle the climate and biodiversity crisis. We’re looking forward to not only sharing practical tips and inspiration, but also seeing what others are doing to create a positive impact. The climate and biodiversity crisis is one of the most important issues we face, and we all must do everything we can to take practical action that works.”
