Metrocentre brings oceans to life for Gateshead classrooms
Pupils in Gateshead have been making waves in the classroom thanks to Ocean Wilders, an interactive education project delivered as part of the Climate Action North Global Wilders® Awards programme.
The Metrocentre funded these sessions, letting children dive into the science, stories, and real-world challenges of the seas. Pupils from Dunston Hill Primary School and Front Street Whickham Primary School built their ocean literacy, discovering key facts about the seas, why they matter to life on Earth, and how to share that knowledge beyond the classroom.
The sessions were delivered by Georgina Fuller, a Climate Action North Associate and founder of The Sea We See, a Community Interest Company specialising in ocean education and learning.
Pupils investigated fossils, shells, seaweed, and waste recovered from the ocean. They asked questions and discussed marine life, pollution, and the challenges oceans face every day.
Sarah Dover, Operations Manager at the Metrocentre, said: It’s been a pleasure working with Climate Action North in delivering these inspiring workshops to schools in our area, helping children understand more about ocean literacy and learning about how to look after our oceans for future generations.”
The Ocean Wilders project forms part of Climate Action North’s wider work to empower young people to act for the planet.
Sharon Lashley, CEO of Climate Action North, added: “We’ve been really lucky to work with the Metrocentre and our Associate Georgina Fuller. The children at both schools left the workshops excited and full of ideas about how to care for the oceans. We’re looking forward to delivering more Ocean Wilders sessions throughout 2026.”

The time for talking is over, today we need to act.
