Climate Action North secures Wildlife Trusts funding to build resilient communities

Climate Action North has secured funding through The Wildlife Trusts’ Green Community Grants Programme to build on its work creating climate-resilient communities across the North of England. The funding will bring more people together to restore nature, protect wildlife and take action on the climate emergency.

At the heart of the programme are Climate Crafters workshops, giving people the chance to try weaving, knitting and crocheting, mending garments, wood and willow work, as well as creating artwork from natural materials.

Sharon Lashley, CEO of Climate Action North, said: “Climate action doesn’t always start with a big project. Sometimes it starts with sitting down together and making something. Climate Crafters will give people the chance to try something new, spend time with others and support their mental wellbeing, while creating something they can keep.”

The workshops will provide opportunities to meet others, share skills and spend time in nature. They are designed to be accessible and informal, so people can take part at their own pace.

Sharon added: “Many people are worried about the climate crisis and what it means for the future. Having positive, practical ways to connect with nature and each other can help people feel less powerless. Climate Crafters offers a way to turn that anxiety into something positive, while supporting mental wellbeing.”

The funding will also support Climate Action North’s CPD-accredited Training Academy, which helps people develop skills in community rewilding and nature recovery. Global Wilders® gives children opportunities to explore the natural world through interactive education and citizen science, while Pollinator Parks® helps communities turn local spaces into habitats for wildlife.

The Green Community Grants Programme supports community-led projects that bring people together to take action for nature and climate. This funding has been made possible thanks to Postcode Lottery players, with grants awarded by the Postcode Green Trust.
