Going wild for books

Social Enterprise, Climate Action North, has confirmed a series of online Book Wilding events to celebrate and showcase a range of books and their authors.

The monthly events will feature books about wildness, rewilding, climate, and nature-based solutions with authors reading their stories and answering audience questions. All ticket proceeds will be donated to the author’s chosen charities.

The announcement follows the success of debut book wilding event in December 2022 with Amy Jane Beer who spoke about her book The Flow. The session, which saw attendees chat with Amy about the book, was very well received.  One delegate, Barbara Keating, said it was: “like sitting down to have a friendly café or pub gathering with the author.”

The confirmed line up of book wilding sessions are all held in association with Stockton based bookseller Drake the Bookshop.

Owners, Mel and Richard, said: “We’re excited to be part of Climate North East’s Book Wilding events. They’ve put together an interesting and eclectic mix of writers to bring what promises to be a series of great little talks about the impact our changing climate is having on our natural environment and, more importantly, showcase the positive work that is happening to help rewild our habitats. This stuff is really too important to miss!”

The first session kicked off on on 26 January 2023 with Lee Schofield, author of Wild Fell: Fighting for Nature on a Lake District Hill Farm.

As an RSPB Site Manager, Lee is responsible for overseeing conservation work across an upland mosaic of woodland, bog, mountain, and meadow covering thirty square kilometres. Wild Fell is his account of a decade working at RSPB Haweswater in the Lake District National Park, and the personal and professional challenges involved in working at the coalface of nature conservation in the uplands.

Climate Action North’s Managing Director, Sharon Lashley, said: “We’ve been flying the rewilding flag in the North of England since 2018, when we held our first rewilding event. Now we’ve added Book Wilding to our portfolio of rewilding events to celebrate many great books and authors and offer an enjoyable way to find out about the topics in a fun, relaxed, and friendly online environment.

“As well as being able to spend quality time with the authors, we’re also raising money for good causes as all ticket proceeds are donated to the author’s chosen charities. We’re looking forward to learning through reading the books we feature in this series of events.”

Sharon concluded: “Here at Climate Action North, we determinedly drive the essential changes to halt the dual climate and biodiversity crisis by taking direct action. Rewilding our marine environment is a significant part of this solution and, alongside hosting rewilding events to inform, inspire, and engage people, our Pollinator Parks ® and Global Wilders ® initiatives both offer manageable, engaging, and effective ways to take practical action focusing on small-scale community rewilding solutions.”
